Added a new pup to the household

Postby Andrew51 » Tue Jul 13, 2021 9:29 pm

As a follow up from the previous thread... Well I somewhat changed directions and we brought a DD home a few days ago. His 'given' name is Benz vom Line Creek, but we have taken to calling him Barry. He's been awesome so far, but obviously we haven't done much other than get housebreaking and crate training going. Looking forward to the adventures ahead.

I think you will be disappointed, but I will gladly take him off your hands, free of charge.

Seriously cute pup.

Haha thanks everyone! Now the real question will be if I can do well enough training to do him justice!

I am a guy who does not like the look of the bearded breeds, be it GWS, PP or Griff, BUT, I fully admit that when they are pups the are THE cutest of all breeds.
At a training clinic there was one GWP and one Spinon pup, around same age, probably 2.5 - 3 month old.
They were playing, jumping and growling at each other. It was the most amusing and cute thing I and my wife ever seen.
She almost kidnaped the Spinon pup.

Keep us posted pls!

Highlander: I have a similar dislike for dogs without docked tails. The sight of a setter or Munster etc. on point drives me nuts. If we all liked the same thing we wouldn't have the diversity we have today. If all anybody wanted was a great hunting dog, we'd all have Griffs.

Fixed it for you.

Congrats on the new pup.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. We are working through the basics. Maybe I should say stumbling. He is the first bird dog for us personally, so plenty of learning ahead.

Where we are at:
Housebreaking- Essentially good to go here. Starting to sit by the backdoor when he wants out. Still taking him out with regularity, but no accidents inside.

Crate training - he's done well with this. Crated at night and during meals. We have a 1 and 3 year old so we crate him while we eat as with 2 toddlers, the floor turns into an all you can eat buffet.

Working on basic obedience now. Recall is good when there aren't too many distractions. Place is coming along.

Breeder introduced him to pigeons. I have done the wing on the string deal once, though I don't plan to do it much more.

He was waded through a creek about chest deep on him and about 10 yards across. After a little encouraging he took to it well.

Have been trying to take him to fields and woods.

Now if I could just get the biting and stealing of shoes to stop.......

Good luck on the shoes. A large assortment of the pup's own toys will help but not cure. Our 6 month Griff is still at it but not as bad.

Sounds like you're doing well. Don't be afraid to give him a sharp rebuke if the biting gets too much. Grab him by thr scruff and give a shake and a harsh NO.

good looking pup, looks like he will have plenty of facial hair.
On the biting push his gums into his teeth make him holler , tell him no.
Do plenty of walks in the woods and fields. Forrest
