Best shampoo for wirehaired coat?

Postby bcg240803 » Sun Apr 14, 2019 8:14 pm

What is it? Specifically for a DD if I HAVE to give him a bath.

Thanks.

Vet Solutions BPO 3 Shampoo 3% Benzoyl Peroxide is what I use on my Griff and PP. It isn't cheap but I was told it is not suppose to damage the harshness of the coat but I would try a small bottle first as it is seems to be pretty aggressive shampoo, at least for cleaning and removing odor. Works pretty good on skunk also :D. I am interested to see the forum chime in on what they use. Mine only get baths if the skunk gets them or the wife finally puts here foot down. They do enough swimming that the baths are usually one every couple months.
You never have to tell a dog what time to be home, give them the keys, and they never ask for money.

I got some stuff from the Vet for dry skin one time but never used it very often. It seemed to work but the dogs didn’t have a chronic problem. Other than that, whatever. Sometimes I’d use Selsun Blue just because that’s what was in the shower when we were in there.

You mean something other than your Wirehairs swimming in every damn lake, duck pond or swamp? :D

Other than a run-in with a skunk that's when mine get a "bath."

Mine are particularly fond of a spring refresher roll in nice green-up elk turds..................................................

Mine gets the same shampoo I use.
I've had several really good dogs, but none were perfect. Neither am I, so keep that in mind!

The question was not about "what is the best ungulate fecal matter for wire hairs to eat" - that being said, my girls will gladly wolf down those tasty elk duds as readily as rolling in 'em...... :x

I worried most about what they scooped up on the run that was down the hatch before being identified.

Thanks all. He is 4 years old and this will be his first bath... and it’s only because of our living situation (living with mother-in-law while our house gets built). I don’t have many other options...

Its a myth that a bath will ruin his coat* We use whatever's on hand...Rusk Shampoo that my wife didn't like if he's outside, whatever bodywash or shampoo is on hand if he's inside.

If its an option take him to Petsmart or a groomer. Its not that expensive and you don't have to wrestle with the dog.

Frankly I don't know how some people never bathe their wirehair. The whole "Just the garden hose" trope sounds absurd.

Maybe if you bathe the dog on something like a weekly basis it could take some of the oil out.

JMO but the harshness is separate from the oil.

FWIW the same is true of shaving the coat. I have seen a handful of dogs that have had large-ish areas shaved (medical reasons) that grow back to where you can't tell.

Watered down blue Dawn dish soap. Make it really diluted, Cuts the grease, leaves them smelling good, and you have it under the sink.

Me'n the dogs showered together. Close the door, there's not getting away or wrestling. Hand held unit is a great tool. If all I was doing is getting the mud off of them I wouldn't use shampoo.
