Chukar Call

Postby IDHunter » Mon Jan 10, 2022 5:34 pm

Are chukar calls worth using? Could see them being beneficial for locating birds, but could also see the downside being you're potentially alerting birds to your presence. Anyone used them with notable success?

Never used one. Actually, never even knew they existed till this post. So here's a totally uninformed perspective :-)

I don't see how they would differ from duck, deer, or turkey calls with respect to alerting birds to your presence. If you can work them well enough to sound convincing to real birds, they may not help but they also probably can't hurt things at all. If (like most duck, turkey, and deer hunters) you have no real idea how to use the call and make realistic animal sounds, then it's best not to use a call at all :-)

Absolutely, makes sense. What I'm trying to gauge most is just generally speaking how receptive chukar are to calls, assuming that you're able to sound realistic on the call.

I never hear Chukars calling during the hunting season. That doesn't mean they don't occasionally but as a way of locating them it would appear to be minimally effective. One of those things, ya don't know till ya try.

Generally if you hear a chukar calling during a walk it is a bad sign. It basically means the sentry has made you and is sounding an alert.

There are times after a covey flush that you will hear birds calling as they try to reform the covey.

I no longer take my call with me. It is light, but still takes up space. Not worth the effort.
