Sharptails in September and October are in the running for my favorite bird to hunt with a pointing dog. Dogs and hunters have to put on the miles to find them, some days more than others, but it is the easiest walking a I do all year and the opportunity to watch the dog work is the best.
They are not in the running for my favorite bird on a plate however. Fresh, seared quickly on the grill is pretty decent especially when you are tired and hungry, baked is good, found a good soup recipe in the NAVHDA magazine that we like.
Bobwhites, Chukars, Huns, Pheasants are all way ahead of the Prairie Grouse for my palate as far as the eating goes. Ruffed Grouse is my #1 on a plate so far.
