Nice mixed bag. Real mature sharptail. Love those old prairie homestead buildings. I'm out in MT now too.
You have to be smarter than the dog to train it.

Oops... Had to scroll down to see whole photos. This is the first time I’ve actually hunted Sharptails. The two or three I’ve shot previously were incidentals while pheasant hunting. I think they may be the best eating of all the upland birds. Yea, the older birds are really something.

Sharptails in September and October are in the running for my favorite bird to hunt with a pointing dog. Dogs and hunters have to put on the miles to find them, some days more than others, but it is the easiest walking a I do all year and the opportunity to watch the dog work is the best.

They are not in the running for my favorite bird on a plate however. Fresh, seared quickly on the grill is pretty decent especially when you are tired and hungry, baked is good, found a good soup recipe in the NAVHDA magazine that we like.

Bobwhites, Chukars, Huns, Pheasants are all way ahead of the Prairie Grouse for my palate as far as the eating goes. Ruffed Grouse is my #1 on a plate so far.

Greatness! I really like eating the sharpies as well! I like hunting them in November when they get squirrelly as all get out. My favorite birds on the table are woodcock roasted whole in a hot oven for just long enough to crisp the skin up. Takes about 3 to make a meal.
