Finally feels like Fall

Postby RowdyGSP » Sat Sep 26, 2020 6:13 pm

High forties and overcast when Rowdy and I first started in a new spot but that still looked great for ruffs or spruce grouse. He did not find any there in 6 dog miles. So we drove to another spot that nearly always is good for a ruff or two. I have taken about 2 to 3 birds from this stretch of creek just about every year for 4 seasons and once I get a few out of here I quit grouse hunting it. As far as I can tell I'm the only person that grouse hunts it, other than my good buddy who I told about it and he went once and didn't find any birds so he quit hunting it. Works for me. Well, right off the bat not 100 yards from the rig, Rowdy got real birdy down in the creek and about that time a young family group flushed like popcorn and Rowdy stopped to flush so I knocked one down, then another as it flushed shortly after. Maybe about 7 or 8 grouse in all. We kept working the creek, although did not find any more birds and looped around a treeline back to the rig. A fun day with a cool breeze in the air.

Wish I could say the same...95 and windy today. Cold front coming tomorrow at some point. Going to chase Prairie chickens but not real optimistic.
You never have to tell a dog what time to be home, give them the keys, and they never ask for money.

Funny how the weather affects us all..... I never stayed home because of it. Doesn't mean it never happened. I entered into Dickinson ND sideways.... Oops, there's my exit.

lots of folks down here tell me "it's too hot to hunt" when I tell them I'm heading to a bowstand in August,,,,

yeah, it's hot,,,but I got's to hunt!

now I'll only hunt a while,,,but I'm hunting

when Earl and I are hunting I have to factor in his heat level of course,,,but we like to get a few hours in early

but I will be GLAD when it get's cooler

47 this morning, not a cloud in the sky. Probably hit 80ish this afternoon. Warmer later in the week.

I'm right there with you guys, I will hunt if it's hunting season... but JD I'm just not sure I could suffer through bowhunting in August in North Carolina. I usually visit there in August and man is it HUMID and 90+ degrees. Gotta hustle to keep the meat from spoiling.

that August bowhunt is in South Carolina (like that makes a difference heat wise)...

seems every year we get 3-4 days that cool off ,,,happened this year on opening weekend - instead of 90s highs were only in the 70s,,,didn't get one but had fun

and yes, have to get on it with the meat, but it's not as bad as you would thing,,,plenty of time

Really feels like Fall here the past couple of days. Mornings in the 40s. Trees getting some color.
