End of the season

Made my first upland trip here in Kansas last weekend, great trip with some new friends. Was able to get out this last weekend and hunt with some old friends. Great way to end the upland season, especially with no ducks to be found. Taz was still on top of his game.

We wrapped up our upland hunting with a western KS trip...lots of hens. Took a picture of the last Rooster of the season that wasn't missed or fly out the field a mile away. Time to rest the paws a bit.

Good stuff, and great pics. 2 weeks ago we hunted a place with tons of birds, most iveseen in years. Unhunted and killer habitat makes a big difference. Last weekend we hunted some great land that had been hunted once all year, amazingly didn't see many birds or signs, usually full of quail but they weren't there either. Saw 5 roosters all weekend, thankfully 4 of them worked great and came off point. Not sure what happened in that area, I'm guessing a good storm with hail last spring/summer. Dmog, I'll PM for some details.

I think we were hunting similar area from the looks of the pictures. Funny what pressure does as it can work in your favor also. We hunted a public walk in spot on Friday pm and there was a ton of hens but I only saw one rooster out of range and one out the end of the field. No blockers, just me and the dogs. I knew they would be wild but watching the dogs work the hens is almost as rewarding. Same spot we hit Sun morning on our way home and as one last short walk as the dogs paws were getting sore and me as well. Same result lots of hens and wild rooster. Got a shot at one and surprise quail covey I missed. Last spot of the field close to the road and I am pretty much done. Dogs go on point. I say to myself "hen" but lets take a picture. Camera battery dead so I use Iphone. Go to flush and dogs relocate 20 yards upwind. I saying now "for sure a hen". Go to flush and dogs relocate 50 yards upwind. Go to flush and its that last rooster and it wasn't a young one. You just never know. Sure made a nice finish for this season for the young dog to be the lead point and retrieve the bird.

Nice Job on the photos Guys. A low quality Iphone photo of Spud with a covey of KS Bobs a couple of weeks ago. 25 MPH constant wind made for tough hunting on that trip. Going through withdrawal now.

Looks like it's time for a Samsung! All mine are phone pics, a few are stills from video.

Glad I made it out a few times at end of season. Taz and I haven't done much upland last few years, I really have missed it. Glad to see he hasn't skipped a beat. Now time to finish strong with a few weeks of honkers.

I would guess you were south of the interstate, we were 5 to 10 miles north. Kansas Public has been pounded to death this year, made the birds we shot on wiha all the sweeter. I didn't like that we didn't even see many hens, especially being that a few of our Farms had not been Hunted. Where we normally find 6-8 Covies of quail, we only found one Covey of six. The way storms come through it is very weather-related on bird populations

Thanks for sharing. Great pics. Cricket and me aren’t done yet. Woodcock through Friday. Quail through the end of February. Conservation season on geese through March 15.

We still have three weekends of goose season left, but without a good warm up and thawing some water out, it doesn't look good. Very rare to get any snow geese to stop in my area on their way North.
