The reason for my issue is the KO system. The system is between the action and the stock, so that upon firing some of the recoil is absorbed by allowing from the action forward to shift back a bit. The idea being that the recoil is absorbed into the stock instead of the shooters shoulder, if that makes since. When I would shoot everything forward of my face would shift back some and it would tap me on my cheekbone. If I held my head up a little it didn’t happen, but I didn’t want to always be thinking about that as I felt I would either develop a flinch or miss shots due to a lack of focus because of a divided mind.

Some people seem to really like this shotgun and the KO system. It wasn’t for me for these reasons. I’d suggest if your looking at it that you definitely shoot one before buying. If you do a search on the gun you will find others have experienced “cheek slap” as well. Not everyone though. Maybe it’s a fit issue. For me the “Kick-Off System” was the “Kick-Face System”.

AG, I thought about the New A5, but wondered if that light weight would cause recoil to pound the shoulder with hot loads?

I have not shot the new A-5 with hot loads but the actual fit of the gun is exactly the same as the old guns and I’ve never been bothered by recoil with them. The guns that hurt the most are O/U’s. Why they’ve become popular is beyond me.

Glad you like the Maxus 2. It's on my short list along with Xtreme plus and the Fabarm Waterfowler.

I shoot my 686 better than any other gun, wish I could snap my fingers and make it a gas gun for ducks.

That is good to hear. I believe that the old A5 that you have is considerably heavier than the new one. I figure this would impact felt recoil.

My new A5 is light and lively in a 26 inch barrel 12 gauge. Very natural shooting gun for me. Advertised as 7 lbs but feels lighter in my hands. The kind of gun I prefer for waterfowl.

3.5 inch shells are brutal for recoil and I don't use them. The recoil with 3 inch shells does not bother me at all.

Felt recoil can be reduced by design and fit so weight doesn’t always have the same effect. Actual recoil and felt recoil can be significantly different. A gun that has more muzzle rise will have more felt recoil than a gun that has less.

That makes sense.

Browning A-5 humpback I bought in 1967. Had Briley add screw in tubes. Love that ol' gun.
I just hate seeing birds die of natural causes unless I'm that natural cause.

Gonehuntin’.... Same thing here. The Briley choke marked mod. Lead, full steel, really reaches out there. I have never found the need to shoot the high speed ammo at ducks and it kills them fine at 45/50 yards. Will put 4/5 number 2’s into the body with excellent penetration. Have shot the high speed junk at pheasants and it doesn’t work very well.

I went from the Stoeger M3500 to the A400 Extreme Plus myself. I got the 2020 DU Shotgun of the year at our Christmas party. It never busts me in the cheek but my middle finger gets busted up from the back of the trigger guard. They even sell a pad to put on there! Forget the pad fix the gun! That KO gives the gun a jump like firing a rifle before it is solidly on the shoulder and getting a scope cut every time. The springs and cylinders in the KO need to be at least 5 times stronger than they are. I got the 2021 DU A400 upland 20ga at our guns and gear party. It is an absolute dream! I shot pop guns with more recoil! That may be my new duck decoying gun from here on out.
