Does anybody hunt with Saluki? I traveled to Kazakhstan last Spetember. They use their dogs to hunt local species of hare (tolai), red fox, corsac and badger. The same dogs are used to hunt roe deer. I imported a pair of dogs from there. This picture was taken in winter. They have some snow in winter, which helps to find the dogs after a long chase.

see my response on the basenji thread here.

fyi, i did own 2 afghans for several years. just never considered them for any hunting duties, though i was aware of their heritage.
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand guard around the world ready to do violence on their behalf!

Yes, Saluki or Afghans are not particularly obedient, like the Basenji. They hunt naturally and they are very good at the hunting. This is exactly why I like this kind of dogs. My other favorite breed is the West Siberian Laika. All the hunting is done naturally, but Laika hunts with you and for you. To make this kind of dog your best friend, take him to hunt often. Teaching is needed only as far as to raise it as a family dog.
