Looking to start Rabbit Hunting w/ pack of Basenjis.

Postby SwampDog » Wed Jul 18, 2007 3:15 pm

Greetings fellow members,

I live in South Louisiana and am looking to start Rabbit Hunting with a pack of Basenjis(we have up to 8 ). I am a beginner and would be honored to be mentored by someone in the field. I am a true admirer of Hunting dogs and the sport.

The Basenji is a 17in/30lb dog from Africa. They have great drive and incredible abilities, they also have thick skin which protects it from the brush and mosquitoes, many excel against other breeds in Lure Coursing. I believe this is important because it preserves and enchances this breed's natural abilties and instincts.

If anyone is willing to mentor/partner up, or give me basic info or links, I will appreciate it. I am willing to drive to Texas,LA, Mississppi, AL, GA, and Florida to hunt or train or to just learn basic things.

Thanks for any input guys, phar2ifc@msn.com

isn't the besinji a non barking dog which emits more of a laughing sound., when and if he makes a sound at all?

also, to the best of my recollection, they are in the sighthound breeds, are they not?

SwampDog, you may find more of a response from the houndsmen on this site:
http://forums.huntingboards.com/

Not to discourage you from posting here at all, but those gals/guys focus more on the type of hunting you are interested in getting in to.

Good Luck!

Terry, you are very right. Basenjis do not bark, they yodel instead.

The Basenji is a small, short haired hunting dog from Africa and hunt with both sight and scent.

Thank you for the link Bigshrimp.

This is a great idea. A lot of people keep Basenjis, treating them like a toy breed. In fact, this is a hardcore hunting dog. I was thinking of this, but never had my own. They are barkless. How you will know, where they are? I have a friend in Wyoming, who is a Basenji fan and he tried them at hunting. It seems they act rather like little sighthounds, chase to catch and kill.

they don't just act like sighthounds. they are sights hounds.

just like the saluki, borzoi, afghan, grayhound, etc .

as suck they do not need you for direction or hunt training. they hunt independantly. they only care for you on the cpompanionship level.

althoughthere are exceptions of the 12 or so basenji i obed trained oly 2 weere waht i would call satisfactory at obed. the majority were outrigt resentful of the obed.

this had nothing to do with them being nice dogs. as long as you understood they just did what they did and you accepted that.

i prefer a more tractable dog for huntintg, as does most of the world . when something is rare, like hunting basenjis, there is usually a good reason

best of luck in your adventures.
