Breeding for Feet?

Postby CurlyDD » Wed Mar 02, 2016 9:09 am

Living the the Upper Peninsula we deal with Winter and a lot of snow. So the dogs feet stay wet and get cracked up from ice/snow. I was just wondering if bird hunters actually breed for good feet? I know on sleddogcentral, you look up feet and it's the topic of everything. Dog mushers emphasize breeding for temperament, ease of eating, and feet (among other things).

So I guess my question is, do you know of any breeder, VDD especially, that puts an emphasis on feet? Maybe this isn't needed because of the prevalence of booties and good dog food/supplements.

I think a good number of breeders focus on feet, especially the ones that hunt dogs out West and do a lot of upland hunting. I'm no expert but most say you're better off the dog with nice tight feet with a good dense thick coat over the toes.
