Peeing on the return

I have a great lab, the best dog I ever had but I have one problem with him I just can't fix. Whenever I send him on a mark on his way back if there is a bush or tree in the return line, he'll drop the mark start sniffing the tree then pee on it. I rush out to him as quickly as possible and grab his colar, have him fetch the mark back, then walk him quickly back to the start point. This hasn't worked, what else can I do to fix this problem?

This seem to be a male thing and I tend to see it more in dominent males.
Your dog is saying, "The fun of getting the object is over now and I will do my thing." By rushing out to him, you are doing the correct thing. I find the only way to correct it is with a mild correction from an electronic collar and say nothing. I let the dog think that the bush or whatever item he lifted his leg on got him. It is the only thing that I have found that really works.
