Watching the bird thrower

I have a year and a half old Chocolate lab. She fetches thrown dummies and birds well, and I have had others throw dummies for her at a distance. But in the field she will not mark the live birds, she is watching me for a throw. What can i do to get her to watch the birds?

Your problem is not uncommon because it is often difficult to find someone else to throw bird/bumpers for you.

With your dog, I would recommend that all of her throws come from a thrower in the field. Have the thrower use a duck call and/or a shot from a blank gun to get her attention then throw a bird. Use large white bumpers or ducks in the beginning and make the early marks short and easy.

After a few sessions you can start to make the marks longer and start hiding the thrower so that she will come to the field and look into the field for her birds.

Best of Luck
