How short should I cut my dog's nails?

How often and how short should I cut nails?

To be honest that depends on the dog. Some dogs rarely if ever require trimming, for others it's a regular occurrence. On dogs with dark colored nails its hard to tell how short to cut without making the dog bleed. I usually have a few silver nitrate sticks (available from your vet) around to stop bleeding if I "quick" the dog. As the nail grows out so does the blood vessel so frequent small trimmings , (as often as every few weeks if needed) will help keep the nails in check.
