Anyone change a young dogs call name

Postby birdawgs » Sat Dec 08, 2018 6:46 pm

Took in a 10 mos old and don't care for his call name. Wondering if anyone has ever done this or should I leave well enough alone?

I would think with some good treats and repitition that he would pick up a new name rather fast. My dog has picked up his nick names without really much effort on my part. If you just got him it might be best to start working on it soon, since you are new to him he will probably associate you with the new name. May I suggest a name?, Ridge.

Ridge is different. I had my mind on copper, as he is black with copper color on his furnishings.

It shouldn't be a problem. I took in an 11 month old dog and never called him by his old call name. Just switched to the new name immediately. No problems.

Easy. Done it on three or four fosters.

The first two I didn't like. Priscilla is an awful name for a dog; she was a 1 year old GWP mix. The next one was four years old, and his name I just couldn't get out with the fluency I'd like. The next two came without us knowing their names. One was old, 10 or so, the other was a about a year.

As has been said, it isn't hard. "Hey Lilah!" give treat, wash rinse repeat.

Call name, not a problem. AKC registered name (if AKC registered), special dispensation required. On the latter, had a friend with a FT Lab purchased from the original owner, came with a dumbarse registered name, he stated the case for changing it, AKC granted the request.

The only time I can recall it being a problem is when I called my wife by my previous wife's name

Dogs are much more forgiving.......

My last Griff didn’t pay any attention to her name, would hardly look at me when I used it. She did know whoa, come, all that mattered.
