Bird Burying

Postby JONOV » Fri Oct 26, 2018 9:12 am

I didn't want to hijack Mr. Higgins' thread.

How common is it for a young/untrained dog to want to bury a bird?

I'd never really seen it until a week or two ago, and saw it again on the video posted earlier. Currently I have a 10 month old wirehair foster. I gave her a pheasant I'd been practicing drags with in my yard to see what she'd do with it. Eyes lit up, she grabbed it, paraded a lap of the yard, then proceeded to bury it. I'd seen her dig up mole tunnels before but never bury anything, and it was funny the way she used her head instead of paws. The pheasant had been well-used and so was pretty beat up before I gave it to her.

Just curious.

They'll come back and eat it later. Used to have a foxy old lab that would wait until we were picking up decoys then Slyly take two or three birds and hide them a short distance from the blind. We'd think we had a limit, start throwing green heads in the truck and be a few short. He always looked so damned guilty too. As soon as we'd look at him, he'd droop his ears and turn away from us. Funny as heck.
I just hate seeing birds die of natural causes unless I'm that natural cause.
