A couple up and comers

Postby SMAbby » Sun Apr 08, 2018 5:56 pm

I was very fortunate to have 2 puppy owners make a 8 1/2 hour round trip visit for 3 hours of dog training. These guys are from my last...literally last litter, and are working towards the VJP and NA. SO needless to say, we needed to work on "exposing" the pups.
One of the pups, wasnt able to hunt all winter because the owner shattered his knee cap! I had offered to take the pup, but with 4 house dogs my husband wasnt liking the idea of adding another! LOL

First pup up was Cooper vom Cedar River. Nice male. methodical search, great coop, and a very nice point that he will hold til you finish your lunch and go pick him up!

Next pup was Cassie vom Cedar River. Her call name is Mocket......but she will forever be known as Mocket the rocket! This pup runs BIG and hard. She was a dot on the horizon of my crappy training field. When she settled in, she had some very nice points. I had given my husband the camera and it was on manual, so I didnt get a lot of pictures.

The day prior I had my dogs out. I wanted to make sure the pigeons remembered how to launch. Last thing I needed was a slow pigeon in front of pups.
Here is one of the pics I took of Anka.

Here is a video of bad dog handling...The wind should have put here much further out on point. I did a crap job handling here and didnt pay attention to where the trap was. It worked out ok thogh.

And then came sweet Baja.......As we free ran the dogs together on this piece of ground. I here Baja barking to my right. I turn my head and she is about 50 yards. I can see her head and neck and then I see another animal of some sort rise up out of the grass. I couldnt tell what it was...didnt care, I just called her off. I thought it was interesting how willingly she left the game..........until my nose hairs curled so tight it brought me to tears....SKUNK.

So, before I show you the video of her bath, I want to mention a few things. I know my car wash well. I have been there plenty of times to hose super stink off of the dogs. I know the water is warm and the bays are heated. I do use the nozzle, but the thing is, you never squeeze it. I use the far end of the cone to wash the dog.
The mixture I chose this time was lathering her up with Mechanics orange hand cleaner and dawn dish soap.......After we were done, I didnt smell her much.....until she licked me. SHe must have got it in the mouth too..

I did learn something the last time I had to deal with this. If the dog is wet when they get sprayed, it's much easier to get 'em smellin' good.

Thank you, I am happy so far with them and the drive of the owners to get the dogs trained.
