Sir Pukes-alot vom schweichenberg

Postby bigmike86 » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:08 am

Should have been the name of my dog... Is there any reason that my dog would consistently throw up about 3-4 times a week since I have had him? He is now 13 months old. I have changed his food twice. Every time it is a yellow-green slime... At least he knows to go stick his head in the toilet now.

Any tips would be helpful. We thought it was a puppy thing but now I am starting to get worried

My dogs throw up bile on an empty stomach. If I feed twice a day it stops. Do you feed once, or twice a day? What did the vet suggest?

I haven't consulted the vet for this problem yet. I am on a small army post in germany and I am not a fan of the vet. She was rude to my friends with a great dane (who is a big sweetheart) and said she was afraid of big dogs. Also, a few other opinions of hers have made me very wary.

Should I take him? I feed him twice a day. But now that you mention it, he does only vomit on an empty stomach. It is either early morning or late afternoon. Should we incorporate a mid day snack to see if the problem goes away? (Other than the grass he usually eats)

There's the cause I suspect. Why dogs eat grass is beyond me. I'm sure someone will say a deficiency of some sort or a nervous habit. Nonetheless, see if you keep him from eating grass, will he still do it? My lab does the same thing from time to time . . . grazes and then gags/throws up.

Try deworming regularly if you're not.

Is there a certain time of day when this occurrs? Dog might need half a crushed Tums if it happens a long time after the last meal.

Yep. Might be roundworms. I'd try worming.

No on the yogurt, but should I be? If so what is the criteria for high quality? Also where can I learn about deworming. Last time we did it was at the vet. Can you do it yourself or is it always a vet thing?

Yes he usually throws up a long time after eating. I am thinking he is trying to settle his stomach by eating the grass.

Yes on yogurt supplementation. A large number of unexplained 'empty stomach puking" is die to a lack of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Initially : Give a heaping tablespoon twice a day for a week.
Then : drop down to a large tablespoon three times a week.
Quality yogurt : Unflavored, unsweetened. Read the labels and get the one with the greatest number of different bacteria.
In our area, Nancy's or Mountain High are the best ones.

My Draht was doing the same thing and took her to the vet. The vet said that sometimes after they have been throwing up that their stomach continues be at upset and they continue to try to throw up. He gave her a shot and a few pills and now she is doing great. Hope this helps
