V dog family I need your help

Postby GRIFF MAN » Fri May 04, 2012 8:12 am

So I need your advice !

I have recently gotten a new neighbor ( that is a d!ck) that is not a dog fan. After 9 years of living where I do, and never having anyone complain about my dogs, I need to fence in part or all of my yard. I live in the country on a dirt road and have about 3 acres of yard.
It's a long story, and I'm just started to settle down so I won't get into it.

Any ideas on materials or designs ? I want it to look nice but don't want to spend a load of money on it either.

Pictures and ideas are welcome.

Help !!

Chain link fence is sort of the default for dog fencing. If you decide to go this route, I'd spend the extra money and get the steel cable that gets laced through the bottom row of holes and stretched tight. This is prevent any "fence testers" from pushing under the fence.

I helped a friend of mine with some fencing around his garden this past weekend. He used Cattle Panels (http://www.tractorsupply.com/feedlot-pa ... t--3502077). They're probably not quite as cheap as chain-link, but they look better IMO. They're also A LOT EASIER to work with than chain link. If you're going to have young pups around, I'd get the panels with smaller openings. He used the panels with 4"x4" openings, and I think a small pup could squeeze through.

Good luck. Bad neighbors are a problem that doesn't go away easily.

Griffman,
I feel for you. I have one of those neighbors too. I would use a stockade fence so they can't see. I had a chain link fence but my problems were not as bad when I put the stockade fence up. My neighbor threw live lobsters at my dog pens lol.

Blue : I like the livestock panels I didn't think of that.

This guy doens't like my dogs bark when he rides his bike by my house. He lives there in the summer only and thinks he owns the whole rode !!They have never hurt anyone, actually he is the only one they bark at.We have a day care lady that walks her kids down the road and they NEVER bark at them.
He peppered sprayed my dogs last year cuz they barked at him, on my lawn !! Then he has enough guts to call the cops on me...that backfired when I told the cops about the pepper spray !

I just recently fenced in a portion of our yard, approximately an acre or so. I used nice aluminum (black) along the driveway and where it would be seen by people. Then in the back where no one would ever really see it, and through the woods I ran 6 ft black coated stock fencing with metal stakes (spray painted them black) pounded into the ground. This combination kept the cost down to a dull roar, and is strong enough to keep the dogs in. The trick with the wire is to keep the top of it a tad loose so the dogs can't get hold of it to climb or jump. And then you let the grass grow up a bit and it will tie it right into the ground. The wire is almost invisible and not unsightly.

You could also use a stockade type privacy fence along the area where your friendly neighbor passes by, then tie in with a wire fence for cost savings.

No matter what.. fencing is expensive! I was surprised how much it cost to put in.

We had a Father & Son duo do our fencing. It is a livestock fence used for alpacas in our area. 5' tall 2"x4" square mesh. The post are 6" wood posts driven into the ground 3'. They used the hydraulic pounder on a skidsteer to pound the posts. Here is a photo of a 4' version.

Calvinator's set up is a good option....you can also put insulators in the wood posts and run current top and bottom to combat the "jail breakers". An electric unit to power up to 10 acre perimeter is not expensive...and you can save quite a bit by being able to put in a lower height fence.

I'm using a hybrid of plastic deer fence (6' high and attaches to snow fence posts) and underground fence, which is set to activate from 2-3' from the fence so he can't escape. It works very well for us, was very economical to install (did the install ourselves and materials were well under a grand for an acre and a bit) and it didn't take much time. I'm very happy with the results and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I would go with something like Calvin has. Wood posts and a maybe a roll of Redbrand fencing. You can use the 6" round posts or 4x4's like I used for the deer fence around my veggie garden. Not sure how much of your 3 acres you're fencing in but I'd look into renting a posthole digger or paying your local farmer to do it with a post-hile tractor attachment. You do not want to try digging all those postholes by hand. Also you might want to consider a fence puller to get it pulled taut to the posts. You might also consider an underground electric fence system. We used them for our Labradors and it worked out very well.

I live in the country too, ironically on 3 acres as well, sure hope I don't have to ever deal with the type of neighbor it sounds like you're dealing with. I moved out here to get away from that.

I looked and don't have any photos... when I get back to Pa I can take some. But the ones with the wooden posts is a very similar idea. The wooden posts will cost more, but will last forever! Cheap way is to use TPosts- Redbrand fence works, I just liked the look of the coated fence.

Google Aluminum fence for looks... it's nice, but not cheap

you know, if by chance you have any Amish by you... check them out for the wooden post fence. They do great work, and prices are pretty good

Forget the fence. I will come from Minnesota and take care of the problem. I will come in the darkness and be gone without a trace of my presence. Just shine your Griff light and I will be there!
