Mixed Bag This Morning

Postby RowdyGSP » Sat Jan 20, 2018 4:20 pm

Went to an area today near my house looking for a grouse or two. Instead Rowdy pointed a smallish covey of around a dozen valley quail. I took 3 birds from it and left the remainders alone for the rest of the year. Then I went driving around scouting open water for ducks and geese. Found a small pocket of open water with a half-dozen honkers on it. They were on to Rowdy and i while we tried to sneak up on them and flew off, just out of gun range. We crouched down under a tree because I saw a flight of gaddies coming. The ducks circled the open water and 2 of them fully committed, cupping their wings and dumping in. I knocked 1 down and Rowdy sprang out into the water for the retrieve. Fun day. Heading back for ducks in the morning tomorrow.

What is that white stuff rowdy is standing in? It is easier to spot and stalk deer than ducks or geese. I love to try but there is always one eye on you it seems. Great work on the quail. I love a mixed bag. It just says I went out to hunt today and meant it.

Neat day. Like the white stuff....when it's where you are and not where I am. Huntin' in it is a whole lot different.

When yer sneakin' up on birds, walk backwards and not straight at them.

Nice to find some birds close to home. Kinda funny seeing valley quail laying on snow! Tasty mixed bag there. I just made a delicious venison quail stew with the last of last year's meat - hard to beat. Not many days left to chase birds...

And not surprisingly they were in the thickest deadfall cover, where the snow wasn't as deep. Popcorned out in all different directions.
