Glucosamine

Does anybody give their older dog a glucosamine supplement? If so, what particular product are you using? I am considering a glucosamine supplement for one of my vizslas who will be 13 this year. She is starting to have isssues at times, although not serious, with stairs and jumping onto her chair. I have never heard any negatives regarding glucosamine; all has been either positive or having had no effect. What are your thoughts on the supplement? And has anybody's dog had any side effects or other negatives from the product?

I give it to both my dogs, young and old, always have. Don't know if it does any good? I did try some the special dog stuff that comes in a small bucket and the stuff advertised on tv and didn't notice any difference between it and the other human form I was feeding.

Have used a Joint enhancher from pet-meds for yrs. . Can't really say if it helped because I started using it beore the dogs had a problem . Used it as a preventative. Figured that it couldn't hurt .

We weren't sure why our griff started limping last year, but deduced it may have been due to running with the Missus on pavement. Anyhow, a few weeks after starting the glucosamine, we've never seen a repeat limp and she gets off the floor without looking like an old man!

I've been give my oldest GSP the human glucosamine complex for over a year now. I even take a couple for myself after a long hunt. I know they work for me.

cosaminDS .THIS IS human TYPE. i get big bottles off of amazon with free shipping and sales.it is cheaper than dog type pills.
it works.
you want CAPSULES not HARD PILLS YOU GET CHEAP AT WAL-MART.
THEY WILL NOT DISSOLVE IN DOG QUICK ENOUGH AND HALF GOES OUT OF HIM.

Be sure it's Glucosamine Sulfate and not Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCL).
A powder inside of a gelatin capsule is the best for absorption.
Most 'hard' pills contain Magnesium Stearate, which is not broken down at appropriate locations in the GI system for proper absorption.

It's not "bad", but it's not as good as it could/should be.
When glucosamine is initially extracted, it's in the HCL form.
The better companies then convert it into the Sulfate form, which is much better.

Another important thing to remember is that "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
IMO, athlete dogs should be on premium joint supplements from the day you bring them home.

Puppy ----> 12 to 14 months = Glucosamine Sulfate & Chondroitin Sulfate

From 12 to 14 months on = Glucosamine Sulfae + MSM

With arthritic changes, Hyaluronic acid should be given along with the Glucosamine + MSM.

And, of course a quality Fish Oil supplement.

I know I will get blasted for this, but I speak from experience. Feed Hill's Science Diet JD and you won't need any supplements.
My DD with bilateral cruciate repairs ate this for the last 3 years of his life - from age 13 to 16. He went from barely being able to get on the couch to jumping over the baby gate to get in/out of the kitchen. We tried to switch to something cheaper a few times and within a week he was crippled up again. I know people here hate Hill's, and I don't feed it to my other dogs - but this particular formula is amazing.
When I worked in a vet clinic, it was the only Hill's formula that we would run out of on a regular basis - $75 for 30 lbs and people had NO complaints about buying it when they saw what it would do, and that they didn't have to buy any supplements, anti-inflammatories, or pain meds.
Take it for what it's worth.......
