Owner Input:
They can really run and don't make the best house pets. Although they are great with kids and don't have a mean done in their bodies. They just like to run. - Christopher. Chicago, IL I must say, Pointers are very under-rated. Here is a breed that has it all - striking good looks, sweet temperaments, and a, "What ever it is, lets go do it!" attitude. Now you should know that there is a HUGE difference between a "show" bred Pointer and a "field" bred Pointer, this is a breed with a whopping 8 DUAL Champions in the history of the breed, and my experience has largely been with the "show" variety. The "field" pointer is often thought of as a blip on the horizon that you need a handler and scout on horseback just to keep track of, in a real hunting senerio it would be somewhat difficult to hunt over a dog who can't find. My Pointer is of entirely "show" lines, but you would never guess it by wacthing her in the field. She covers an incredible amount of ground and yet is consious of where her handler is, and is smart enough to recognize the difference between a handler on foot and one on horseback and adjusts her range accordingly. She is animated and breath-taking on point. The Pointer is my "other" breed, weimaraners being my first. In many ways they are similar - aristocratic and noble looking, sleek clean lines, eager to please and loyal. They will make you laugh. Where they differ is in the level of intelligence, my pointer is very smart, learns quickly, and is very forgiving - if you make a mistake with her she will forgive and for get. The weims, on the other hand are frighteningly intelligent, given an inch the take a mile. They are master manipulators and button pushers. Don't get me wrong - Pointers can be very rotten and naughty, but they couldn't even conceive of pulling the kind of things that Weims pull with that "Who me?!" expression on their face. Pointers are excellent house dogs, very clean though they do shed in 2 colors, and they are always ready to go do something - you just name it!
