Breed organizations: French Brittany Spaniel Gun Dog Club

Owner Input:

I just learned about this breed last summer when I was trying to decide what dog to buy for our family. Our little six month old EB is a lot of fun. She loves to got to the field. The females tend to be late bloomers in hunting, at least from this line, but she loves to run around and smell everything. She was just hopping over bushes and clumps of grass on our evening romp tonight, and pointed a dove.

These dogs are recognized as Brittanys by the AKC, but the two breeds are separated by the UKC. Why two Brittany breeds? That is, Brittany and Epagnuel Breton, or French Brittany Spaniel. Because they are different! Many European standard dogs are disqualified by AKC rules about color of nose -- black is encouraged, eyes are to be dark, amount and color of hair -- black is allowed, tri with black is allowed -- length of ears. They are even a little bit smaller than AKC dogs -- my pup will likely not top 30 pounds.

Little spaniel type dogs like this have been around in the Brittany region of France for hundreds of years, helping hunters, farmers, and poachers alike. British sportsmen brought over their dogs to hunt, and so there were some crossings, but the breed was developed in and is mostly French.

The breed came to the US originally before WWII and was developed to the Brittany as it is now known in AKC circles to meet the tastes of US breeders and hunters. Those who still appreciate the fine original EB qualities seek out European bloodlines and breeders for their dogs. - DAVID HARRIS
