Owner Input: I became a Drahthaar owner a little over 2 years ago. These dogs are the walking hunters dream. I can only afford 1 dog and these dogs do it all. They have been bred for over 90 years following the strictest of rules. The dogs have to be tatooed before leaving the litter and then they have to go through a series of tests to be bred. The tests are strictly hunt test. The dogs have to point, retrieve, pattern and can not be gun shy. You also have to get their hips x-rayed before being allowed to breed them. Females average 45 -64 pounds and the males are a little larger. My first impression of these dogs was "they are hunting machines". At 6 months of age my dog retrieved every dove I shot. I hadn't trained her at all on retrieving. These dogs need chest protection, because of their intense search of cover. I have had labs and brittany's before this Drahthaar, never again. The Drahthaar is the machine I have looked for all my life. - Chris Lahners | |
