Best age to spay dogs

Dear Dr. Mike.
At what age do you think a dog should be spayed? I have read doing it to early may make the dog fat and lazy. What are your thoughts on this matter.

Dan, I like to spay dogs prior to their first heat so I usually operate in the 4-6 month old range. Have you noticed that fat/lazy dogs are often associated with fat/lazy owners? Enjoy your dog! Dr. Mike
